Traffic cops made an arrest and seized eight vehicles in Coventry yesterday as part of a national week of action targeting dodgy drivers
Police were based in Lidl car park on Foleshill Road and using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology to identify motorists who are on the city’s roads illegally.
Eight vehicles were seized for being uninsured − including two that were pulled over having initially refused to stop − and will be crushed or sold if not reclaimed and shown to be insured within the next seven days.
An 18-year-old man from Coventry was arrested after trying to speed away from police in a VW Passat.
He was involved in an alleged collision and was detained as he tried to escape.
The teenager has been released under investigation while police collate evidence and probe why he was so keen to evade capture.
Last year, West Midlands Police seized around 5,000 uninsured vehicles from the region’s roads.
Police say driving uninsured is a criminal offence − but it’s also unfair on law-abiding drivers who properly insure their vehicles.

One driver got a surprise when he pulled in to a supermarket car park...
Another driver - believed to be in a VW Golf - pulled in to the Lidl car park before driving off when he spotted the police vehicles.
The erratic behaviour was spotted by officers and they radioed through to colleagues on the roads who quickly spotted the car and escorted it back to the site.
After refusing to get out of the vehicle, the driver reversed the car on to a footpath and over a grass verge before escaping on to Foleshill Road.
The VW Golf was then quickly abandoned with the driver running off. The car was seized.
