Work to transform Coventry into one of the world’s most digitally connected cities has begun.

CityFibre has started work on its national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) project in Coventry.

The initiative aims to bring full fibre and therefore superfast broadband, to up to one million UK premises by 2021 in partnership with Vodafone.

The rollout will benefit both residential addresses and business premises.

The first area in Coventry where the installation is taking place is Longford .

It is set to be followed by Upper Stoke , Foleshill and Holbrooks.

The project saw the recent appointment of Leigh Hunt as city development manager for CityFibre in Coventry.

She said: “We’re at a really exciting stage of our roll-out in Coventry as the build gets underway.

“This project comes at a key time for the city and the £60m investment from CityFibre will be transformational for residents and businesses alike.

“With the advent of ultrafast, full fibre broadband, residents of Coventry will be able to enjoy and take advantage of a range of possibilities.”

Coventry is the fourth city-wide FTTP project to get underway as part of the CityFibre and Vodafone partnership.

CityFibre said once the Coventry project is complete it will “futureproof” the city’s infrastructure and “deliver digital transformation across the city”.

The project is set to deliver economic benefits for the city too.

Research by economic consultancy Regeneris has found the local housing market could increase in value by £101m, while businesses could unlock £57m through increased productivity and innovation as a result of full fibre access over the next 15 years.

Councillor Richard Brown, chair of the audit and procurement committee at Coventry City Council, said: “We are all well aware of the importance of effective communications.

“People buying or renting a new home and new starter businesses will weigh up a list of factors when considering where to locate, and the quality of digital communications is crucial. “This will benefit households and will further retain businesses in Coventry.”

At present full fibre is only available to less than five per cent of premises across the UK.

As well as delivering increased speed, it also offers near unlimited bandwidth and reliability. Users will be offered a superior and more reliable broadband service, capable of Gigabit speeds (1,000 Mbps).

And yet parts of the city centre have yet to be offered fibre of any kind ALTHOUGH Hyperoptic is weighing the possibility of offering FTTP to residents on the Spon End estate.
