A violent and bullying Coventry man had such control over his partner that she could not go anywhere without him, and had to hand over her benefit payments to him.

Johnnie Jefferiss regularly assaulted her, and dictated how much she ate and when she could wear make-up – which was usually to cover the bruises he had caused.

Eventually the police became involved, and Jefferiss, 22, of Flint Avenue, Allesley Village, was jailed for two years and eight months by a judge at Warwick Crown Court.

He had pleaded guilty to using controlling and coercive behaviour towards his 20-year-old victim, and a further charge of assaulting her was allowed to lie on the court file.

Prosecutor Russell Pyne said the couple had met when the young woman was living at the Gateway hostel in Coventry and sometimes buying drugs from Jefferiss.

If he was selling drugs shouldn't he also be jailed for that as well?
