Police officer avoids jail after assault on teenage boy in Rugby
PC Laura Lawson had worked as an officer in Warwickshire for five years but quit after a court heard she had used "disproportionate force" against the youngster
A police officer has avoided jail over an assault on a 17-year-old boy and two others.
PC Laura Lawson had worked as an officer in Warwickshire for five years but quit on Tuesday, October 30, after a court heard she had used "disproportionate force" against the youngster.
The BBC reports that she kicked the youngster twice in the head while responding to a disturbance.
She was given a three month custodial sentence at Worcester Crown Court but it was suspended for 12 months, meaning she will serve no time in jail unless she commits another offence in that time.
Lawson was however put on a curfew for three months, and was made to pay costs.
And it is not the end of the trouble for the 31-year-old former West Mercia Police officer.
She could now also face misconduct proceedings by the force.
The court heard how Lawson had turned up to a disturbance in the area of Avocet Close in Rugby on April 16 last year.
It was during this incident that she used disproportionate force against a 17-year-old boy and two others.
West Mercia Police referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who conducted an investigation and subsequently referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service who authorised the summons against the officer.
Lawson pleaded guilty to the assault at the court on Monday, October 29.
The next day she was handed her sentence by judges and quite the force.
They should giver her a medal!
