A man has died in a hit-and-run crash that saw one or possibly two cars "driving at speed" in Coventry.

The fatal incident happened as the victim was crossing Allesley Old Road, close to the junction with Duke Street in Chapelfields, at around 7.50pm on Sunday.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, but sadly the man, who is believed to live locally and be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed off for a number of hours while collision investigators examined the scene.

Police have also said that the man's family are being supported by family liaison officers.

Detectives from West Midlands Police’s serious collision investigation unit are keen to hear from any witnesses who were in the area at the time and either saw the collision or a car driving nearby with front-end damage.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes said: "We’re still trying to understand exactly what’s happened but we understand at least one, possibly two cars, were driving at speed along the road before the impact.

"We’re still trying to establish the make of the car or cars involved but it’s clear that the offending vehicle would have suffered some front-end damage.

"I would urge any motorists with dash-cam footage who were driving near the area this evening to check their footage to see if they have caught a damaged car on camera; they could hold vital information and I would urge them to make contact.

"Similarly, if anyone living nearby has CCTV cameras that might have caught the cars immediately before or after the crash or anyone who’s witnessed anything that could help the investigation − I need these people to call me."

Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 999 or 101, and images or CCTV footage can be emailed to the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at FL_COLLISION_INVEST@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk .

Alternatively, details can be given anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

The victim of Sunday night's fatal hit-and-run in Coventry has been named.

Adeel Gul died after being hit by a car, possibly two, when he was crossing Allesley Old Road, close to the junction with Duke Street in Chapelfields, at around 7.50pm.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adeel's family have now paid tribute to a "dedicated family man" and said "Coventry's angel has fallen".

They also urged those responsible for his death to "do the decent thing and come forward".

In a statement, his heartbroken family said: "Adeel was a young man who touched so many people through his acts of kindness.

"A dedicated family man and devoted son. A loyal and kind brother and uncle.

"Coventry's angel has fallen and Coventry has lost an honorable and loving member of its community who will be deeply missed by many.

"He had great sense of humour and positive outlook on life. Through the work he did at AG Boxing on Bodmin Road he touched so many hearts and helped a wide range of people within the community.

"He created the AG Boxing family where people from all walks of life were welcomed."

Adeel loved ones also urged anyone with "information about this tragic accident" to contact police.

They added: "We ask those who are responsible to do the decent thing and come forward to help the family to get some closure on their deep loss."
