A blackmailer rang one of his victims and claimed to be holding his wife hostage.

Daniel Fox had even managed to disguise his phone number by using the number of the victim’s wife - however the woman he claimed to have hostage arrived home while her husband was still on the phone to Fox.

An investigation finally led officers to Fox, from Humber Road, Stoke , who was using a scamming technique known as ‘spoofing’ to disguise his own phone number and replace it with one that was familiar to his victims.

The 29-year-old then went on to make demands for money of up to £10,000 with threats of violence towards the victims’ loved ones and property if his demands were not met.

He targeted people in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

Fox pleaded guilty to three counts of blackmail and was jailed for four years and 10 months in prison at Leicester Crown Court.
