Staff and club members threw chairs at the would-be robbers

Brave staff and punters at a Coventry working men's club pelted a stunned gang of knife and axe wielding robbers with chairs.

Four masked raiders entered Wyken Working Men's Club shortly after midnight today (August 19) and demanded to be taken to the safe.

Armed with a knife and axe they probably expected those inside to follow their orders.

But staff and customers refused to give in and instead pelted the crooks with chairs.

The raiders, repelled by the bombardment, fled the premises empty handed.

Thankfully, despite the traumatic experience for those involved, no one suffered any serious injury.

However, one person did suffer a minor injury to their hand during the incident.

It is currently unclear how much damage the club has sustained following the incident - but one Coventry couple will be hoping that it is good news.

Sharon Marsden and Andy McDonald are set to tie the knot tomorrow, and are having their wedding reception at the working men's club.

And last week, CoventryLive told you how the people of Coventry have come together to help Sharon and Andy plan their wedding on extremely short notice, after Andy received the tragic news that he had just weeks to live.

No descriptions? No mention of a get-away vehicle?

Let's hope that the offenders are apprehended quickly, because if they aren't, you can bet your life they'll strike again.
