Police officers spent almost two hours talking a woman down from a car park roof in Coventry last night (August 15).

West Midlands Police was called to Corporation Street just before 6pm to reports that a woman was in distress at the Lower Precinct car park in the city centre.

The major road close to the city's Ikea store was closed and bus services diverted as police spoke to the woman and urged her to come down.

It took almost two hours for her to be returned to safety, and she has now been referred for treatment.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called at around 5.50pm to reports of a woman on top of a car park.

"We have spoken to her and she has come down and she is safe and well.

"She has been referred for some treatent."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by police at 6.24pm.

"It was to Croft Road near the Lower Precinct car park.

"We treated one woman in her 20s at the scene but she was left in the care of the police."
