A suspected burglar is in custody today after falling in a canal while running from police.

Another man managed to get away after jumping onto a boat and taking off down the canal.

The two men were pursued by police investigating reports of a burglary at a building site in Longford, Coventry, on Sunday, August 12.

Police arrested the 31-year-old who fell into the canal while the other man took off in the small motorboat then disappeared on foot.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called to a report of a burglary on Grange Road, Longford, Coventry, at around 6.25pm.

"Two men, who were seen nearby, fled from police alongside a nearby canal.

"One of the men fell into the water and was subsequently arrested. The other man got into a small motorised cabin boat, which he took further up the canal before abandoning it and running off.

"The 31-year-old who was arrested on suspicion of burglary is still in police custody."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 and give log number 1916 of August 12.
