Fire crews have been tackling a spate of grass fires in the recent hot weather - the latest of which was at a Coventry nature reserve.

Firefighters from Binley and Foleshill were sent to a blaze at Wyken Croft Nature Park on Friday afternoon (July 27).

Photos show a large area of scorched grass but crews managed to contain the blaze before it spread to any nearby trees or bushes.

It is not known whether the fire was started deliberately.

Today's rain will be welcomed by firefighters across the region who have been working relentlessly to put out fires of this nature over the last few weeks.

Earlier this week firefighters from around the city tackled blazes at Gerard Avenue, Canley; Mitchell Avenue by Earlsdon Rugby Club; Jardine Crescent in Tile Hill and by the Moat House Leisure Centre in Wood End.

Andrew Higgins, Watch Commander at Binley Fire Station, told CoventryLive crews were facing numerous call outs a day to fires started deliberately.

Despite extensive work in schools he said the only way to slow the firestarters now was to pray for rain.
