A paranoid schizophrenic poured petrol on a homeless man in Coventry and told him: "You are the devil - I am going to kill you."

Benjamin Casey then told a woman he was going to set her on fire during the terrifying incident in the city centre.

Casey was charged with two counts of making threats to kill, but was deemed unfit to enter a plea and was later found to have done the acts stated during a finding of facts trial.

And today at Warwick Crown Court, the 31-year-old was made subject to a hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

Judge Lockhart had three options on how he could deal with Casey: a hospital order, a supervision order or a discharge.

He decided that Casey - who had 13 convictions for 30 offences including possession of a knife, outraging public decency, harassment and assaulting a police officer - would be subject to a hospital order, under the Mental Health Act, and would continue to have treatment at the Reaside clinic.

And it was stated that a restriction would be placed on Casey's order due to the "risk that he will commit other further offences so it's right to protect public from further harm".

The restriction order, which the judge gave "without a limit", means that Casey cannot be discharged unless the Ministry of Justice or a tribunal deem him fit to be released.
