A major road into the city will be closed for resurfacing works in the coming weeks.

Rugby Road, which runs through Binley Woods and out towards Rugby, is undergoing extensive carriageway resurfacing.

The work will start on Monday and is expected to last until August 15.

The road closure will be in force from 9.30am until 3.30pm on weekdays during this time.

The closed stretch of road is less than a mile long, but vehicles looking to get from one side to the other will see a diversion of just over eight miles.

Residents and surrounding businesses have been notified of the planned works and contractors will be on hand to advise on the safest access routes to and from properties inside the closure.

Councillor Jeff Clarke, portfolio holder for transport and environment at Warwickshire County Council, said: “These works are needed to carry out comprehensive repairs to this busy road. This includes a complete resurfacing, replacement of iron works and repairs to kerbing.

"The works are scheduled to start and finish in the summer holidays and will be carried out during off-peak hours during the week to minimise disruption.

“By undertaking these works now we are ensuring the road is safe and fit for purpose for future years and can withstand with the volume of traffic on this well-used route.”

The diversion route will be signposted and will go via Rugby Road, Brandon Road, Bretford Road, Brandon Road, Queens Road, Fosse Way, Rugby Road, Coventry Road, Brinklow Road, Brandon Road and vice versa.
