Fury over unfixed 650ft street which has TWENTY potholes waiting to be filled in

Is this Britain's worst road - with twenty potholes blighting its surface?

Residents of Montalt Road in Coventry certainly think so and have expressed their frustration about the state of it, calling it a 'complete mess'.

They say that potholes have been a feature of the road for a decade and despite being patched up persistently reappear.

Along with 16 other bumps there are four massive 'pits', at least four inches deep on a 60 foot stretch of the 650 foot road.

Angry residents claim the council has been out numerous times to repair it but the quality has been so poor that the holes reappear within months.

The gravel and pebbles littering the road have also caused damage to cars' paintwork.

There are also concerns the potholes could cause severe damage to tyres and suspension, especially when rain gathers and conceals their true depth.

Retired police officer John Wickwar, 74, who's lived on the road his entire life, said: 'It's a complete mess. It's like a patchwork quilt and like a dirt track to drive on. I'm just exasperated.

'People I've spoken to can't believe it either. They say they've never seen anything like it.

'There is gravel all over the place and even pebbles two to three inches long.

'When people drive past they jump up hit the car and the paintwork leaving scratches.

'I'm lucky as I can park on a drive, by my car still gets hit by some of them. It's got to the point where you can hardly park on the road.

'When it rains the hole becomes a lake. It's really dangerous, as you have no way of know how deep it is.

'When it freezes, you are just driving on ice.

'If you were to hit it at any kind of speed, it would do serious damage to your suspension, if not your tyres.

'I saw people driving along and clunking into it yesterday. It did not look good.'

Mr Wickwar claims he has been complaining about potholes in the area for the past eight years.

According to him, every time the council have come out to make repairs, they have been inadequate.

He said: 'Lots of times I have seen them turn up with a bucket of tar, drop it into the hole, pat it down with the back of a spade and leave again. It's a disgrace.

'They've done this whole three times in the past 12 months.

'But the problem just keeps coming back, and it's not good enough.

'The council said they would send an inspector, but they have not been.

'Cars are swerving round it to avoid bumping down to try and avoid major damage.

'They have repaired some roads that are dead ends around here but not this road, which has traffic going down it the whole time.'

A Coventry City Council spokesperson said: 'Montalt Road is being included in the 2017/2018 carriageway resurfacing programme that is going to be approved next week.

'In the meantime, a council officer will be going to visit the road.'

The council added any repairs needed would take place to ensure the safety of road users.

'Plastic' road trialled in Coventry...

Postby dutchman » Thu Jun 21, 2018 1:33 pm

A trial, using plastic pellets and old tyres as road resurfacing material, is taking place in Coventry

The pellets and tyre "crumbs" are used as a binding agent, replacing much of the bitumen traditionally used, said the city council.

As well as reducing the bitumen content, obtained from oil, it reuses plastic that many cases would end up in landfill.

Its proponents claim the roads also last longer and do not develop pot holes as easily as conventional surfaces.

Montalt Road in the Cheylesmore area of the city, which has been resurfaced using the alternative materials, will be monitored as part of the trial.

The scheme will be rolled out across the city if successful, the council said.

'Plastic road' trial to be extended

Part of a main Coventry road will be resurfaced with an environmentally friendly plastic material following a trial elsewhere in the city.

A pilot scheme was launched by the council in June, in which roads were resurfaced in material containing two different types of plastic pellets - made from materials that would otherwise of gone in to landfill or been incinerated.

The pellets are used as a binding agent, the city council says, replacing much of the bitumen which is ultimately a fossil fuel.

Trials have so far "gone well", a council spokesman said, with a section of the Birmingham Road in Allesley now revealed as the next target for the scheme.

Resurfacing of the road will be carried out at the turning for Gardenia Drive and the roundabout for the A4114.

"You are not only getting rid of the plastic, but they also make the tarmac more hard wearing.” from Councillor Jayne Innes Cabinet Member for City Services

More stupidity from our hopelessly ignorant council.

We will get micro particles from this road surface that will wash into the drainage system and pollute our water courses.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Coventry road dubbed worst in Britain transformed with revolutionary new scheme

Image

A Coventry road once dubbed 'the worst in Britain' is now one of the best in the business thanks to a revolutionary new scheme, say residents.

Montalt Road in Cheylesmore was billed the country's worst by a national newspaper in 2017 due to the 20 potholes residents said blighted its surface.

The road was subsequently chosen as the focus of a trial scheme by Coventry City Council last summer, resurfacing it with an environmentally-friendly alternative.

Coventry's pilot, based on a scheme first used in the UK by Cumbria council, uses plastic pellets made from materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Montalt Road resident John Wickwar was among those to lead the campaign for action.

The former policeman passed away at the end of last year after works were carried out, but his neighbours say they are so far thrilled with the scheme he helped bring about.

Another resident, 62-year-old Kathleen Hall said: "He complained for 14 years.

"It was shocking before. We could not reverse our cars out without getting stuck in a hole.

"Now it is the smoothest road. It is the best in the city."

My previous comment about the particle run-off still stands, though it might be some while before anyone actually realises. Just pushing the problem down the road aren't we?

Plastic roads to be surfaced across Coventry after pilot success

Image

MORE environmentally-friendly plastic roads will be surfaced across Coventry after a successful pilot scheme.

Birmingham Road in Allesley will be resurfaced using plastic pellets made from materials that would otherwise have gone into landfill or been incinerated.

Resurfacing began on March 11 and will be delivered in three phases in order to minimise disruption.

The greener material contains rubber crumbs that have come from old vehicle tyres and will be rolled out by Coventry City Council.

Montalt Road in Cheylesmore was the first street in the city to be laid with the new surface in June last year.

It was plagued by potholes according to complaining residents but the new surfacing is intended to combat this problem.

Council chiefs claims that the new method is as hard-wearing and effective as traditional methods.

As well as the clear recycling benefits, using recycled plastic and tyres is proving to be a hit with local people, chiefs claim.

Cabinet Member for City Services Councillor Pat Hetherton said: “We were thrilled with the results of our trial on Montalt Road, one of the city’s residential streets, so we’re continuing to use recycled materials on our roads as we’ve seen the benefits for road users, and of course the environment.

“Birmingham Road is one of the city’s busier routes, and the busiest route we’ve use this environmentally friendly option on but we are confident it will prove to be very successful."

...environmentally friendly...

It is not environmentally friendly as we will eventually find out
