A Nuneaton pub is imposing strict new rules after rowdy football fans caused mayhem during England's first World Cup match.

One punter claimed glasses were thrown around the room, with one breaking a projector, and beer was "dripping off the ceiling".

The Chase on Higham Lane will now be ticketing the group matches on Sunday and Thursday - and only allowing fans over 21 to watch.

In addition punters will have to drink from plastic cups after staff were faced with smashed glass strewn across the floor in the aftermath of Monday's game against Tunisia.

One man, who did not want to be named, blamed the chaos on "over-exuberance from the youngsters" and claimed they "went mental" after England's first goal.

He said: "They were jumping all over each other, glasses smashed everywhere.

"One glass hit the projector and that stopped working so everyone was told to leave the room which had been decorated and set out especially for the football. Everyone went in the bar which was already rammed.

"Then the winning goal went in in injury time and exactly the same happened again - beer dripping off the ceiling, broken glass everywhere, tables had been turned over."

A spokesperson for The Chase Hotel said: “After some anti-social behaviour at the England game on Monday night, we have taken steps to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable and safe viewing experience for guests when watching the next England game.

"Therefore this Sunday’s game will be a ticketed event which is for over 21s only, and we will be replacing all glass with plastic cups.”
