The majority of the jobs based in Westwood Park are being relocated to the bank’s Northampton centreMore than 180 jobs are to go from Barclays in Coventry as part of a huge reorganisation of operations.
The majority of the jobs based at the bank's office on the Westwood Business Park , Westwood Way, are being relocated to its Northampton centre, some are being relocated to India and some will disappear altogether.
The bank told staff about the plan today, announcing that 127 roles from its fraud/unsecured fraud operations would be relocated to its Pavillion Drive base in Northampton.
In addition it revealed that 39 fraud/unsecured fraud roles would relocate to India, while 17 roles would “fall away” due to “a reduced requirement for leadership roles in Coventry”.
The Westwood Business Park centre currently employs almost 1,500 people.
The move, which also saw the relocation of 200 jobs in Cardiff to Northampton and India, was condemned by the trade union Unite
The union branded it “a deep blow for the local economies in Cardiff and Coventry”.
Dominic Hook, Unite national officer said: “Barclays bank has decided to cut hundreds of jobs in Cardiff and Coventry with an unacceptable business rationale.
“The scale of this announcement means that many of the highly experienced and skilled staff in these workplaces have little prospect of redeployment within the bank.
“Unite is clear that Barclays bank is failing in its responsibilities to its staff and customers in the Cardiff and Coventry areas.
“These plans offer no current mitigation against the planned job losses and the union is demanding that the bank revisit these damaging plans.”
The union said the move was a particularly “bitter pill” for Cardiff staff, due to a number of recent site closures in the region.
It said the bank’s Coventry operation had also seen a number of major redundancy programmes in recent years.
The union said its officers were now on site at both centres and would remain there for the next few days.
It said the staff affected worked in a number of departments including fraud telephony, delayed payments, i24, prevention and disruption and support, merchant services complaints, underwriting, customer services, operations and also IT.
