The stench is so bad they haven't been able to open their windows for over a week
A broken sewage pump has caused quite a stink for this Coventry couple.
They claim a nasty smell has been lingering outside their home for over a week due to a drainage problem which left a patch of waste running down the side of their block of flats.
Albert Brown and his partner Michelle, who live at Conway Court, Merlin Close , say the stench is so bad they can't open their windows leaving them living in a "sauna".
"Sewage has been coming out of the drains and running down the side of the building," said Albert, 53.
"Our flat is on the edge so we're probably getting the worst of it.
"It's a mess. People use that path all the time, kids have to walk down there to get to nursery. It's a health hazard."
The recent hot weather has made the situation even worse according to Albert.
He said: "We can't even open our windows because it smells that bad.
"We're absolutely baking in here - it's like a sauna, it's unbearable.
"We're just worn out now, we can't sleep at night because it's so hot without the windows open."
Albert, who is also asthmatic, said he was even struggling to breathe couped up in his home.
Broken pump
The stink has been caused by a broken sewage pump, which was first reported last Thursday.
Photos taken on Monday (June 4) appear to show a patch of sewage outside the building, which Orbit Housing, who manage the property, say has since been cleared up.
Severn Trent told CoventryLive the pumping station is privately owned and not their responsibility.
A spokesperson said: “We’ve had engineers attend the address twice to investigate what’s causing the problem.
"They’ve found it’s down to a faulty pumping station which is privately owned.
"The problem has been reported to the owners of the pumping station and we’ve also notified the local housing provider.”
