A heavily pregnant woman had rocks thrown at her by a gang of children as she relaxed in a communal garden at the apartment block where they live, her fiance has claimed.

The man, who did not wish to be named, claimed the youngsters were from a traveller encampment on the neighbouring Ponderosa playing fields in Tile Hill.

He said the situation unfolded in the communal garden of flats where he and his fiancée, who is 40 weeks pregnant, live in Dunhill Avenue.

The incident took place at around 3.30pm on Saturday May 19 and quickly escalated.

It came after "hostile"ravellers set up camp at the Ponderosa playing fields on Jardine Crescent on Thursday May 17.

The man said: “My fiancée and I live in new-build apartments at Dunhill Avenue, overlooking the Ponderosa playing fields.

“We have a communal garden area at the ground floor of our apartments, which is secluded by boundary railings around the perimeter of the garden area.

“At about 3.30pm on Saturday, my fiancée, who is 40 weeks pregnant, went downstairs to sit on the grass in our communal garden and read her book.

“She positioned herself about 10-20ft away from the railings separating her and the field, where, of course, the traveller encampment is.

“Within minutes of her sitting down, a group of young boys, aged between 5-10 years old, started verbally abusing her from the railings as she sat on the grass.

“After minutes, this escalated to water guns and even more verbal abuse and foul language.”

The concerned dad-to-be-said the situation escalated further.

“Having tried to tell them to go away and shout across to the parents to control their kids, the abuse persisted and got worse,” he added.

“Within minutes, several children were throwing rocks and hurling abuse at my fiancée, who was eventually hit on her leg, just before the kids started climbing the perimeter to fence and to use their words ‘get to’ her.

"She then came inside, obviously very upset, and we immediately phoned the police.”

After the couple went inside an elderly neighbour was also drawn into the fray.

The pregnant woman’s partner said: “We understand that once she had come inside, the kids continued throwing rocks at an old woman, who lives on the ground floor of the apartments.

“We were later informed that she had been shouting out of her ground floor window and telling the children to get down off the railings.”

And the situation continued in a hostile vein when the police arrived and after they left, according to the man who added: “From the view of our apartments, we could see the actions of the children, who continued to wreak havoc for the rest of the afternoon in the local area.

“The field is now covered with litter and adjacent to back garden of our communal area is a pile of rubbish, almost the size of a bonfire, from the whole encampment - about 6ft tall.”
