Passengers had to be evacuated when a bus caught fire in Keresley.

The driver of the National Express single decker was able to evacuate passengers from the bus, which was well ablaze on Bennetts Road yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews from Foleshill station were called to the scene, where the stricken bus was quickly engulfed in flames.

Breathing apparatus and powerful jets were used to tackle the blaze - which saw the bus damaged beyond repair - though the engine was salvaged.

Yesterday's fire was the second involving a National Express bus in Keresley, in the past few months. Back in November, fire crews tackled a double decker bus blaze on Keresley Road.

Paul McArthur, who lives nearby, said his son, Ollie, first spotted the bus in flames. He said: "Ollie spotted it, he said “daddy what’s that chemical smell” when we were out the back, then he said “look at the smoke’, so I ran out to the front and shouted if anyone was on the bus, but saw no one, then I dialled 999.

“Ollie went over and spoke to the fireman he said it was an electrical fault on the indicator light that caused a spark which lead to the fire”

Local residents captured pictures from the scene, praising fire crews for their quick responses.
