Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has its first ever female leader.

Councillor Julie Jackson has made history at the Town Hall , becoming the first female leader of the council since its inception in 1974.

Following the local elections, the council has No Overall Control (NOC), so when it came to deciding who would become leader, it was a two horse race – Labour proposed Cllr Jackson while the Conservatives proposed their leader, Cllr Kris Wilson.

Cllr Jackson secured 17 votes from her fellow Labour members but Cllr Wilson polled 15 votes from fellow Tories, a vote from independent councillor Ron Tromans. Green Party councillor Keith Kondakor abstained.

It meant that Cllr Julie Jackson had enough votes to become leader.

As leader, taking over from former Town Hall chief Dennis Harvey, Cllr Julie Jackson formed a new-look cabinet.

Membership has been reduced from six to five, with Cllr Ian Lloyd being elected as deputy leader as well as art, leisure and economic development cabinet member.

Cllr Barry Longden is now in charge of overseeing housing, health and communities while Cllr Neil Phillips is cabinet member for planning and development and Cllr Jill Sheppard is the new central services and refuse cabinet member.
