Face of "cowardly" driver who killed OAP and sped offA driver who hit and killed a pensioner while driving at nearly 20mph over the speed limit has been jailed.
Mohammed Ahmed left 83-year-old Milton Forde dying in the middle of the road after striking him with his BMW in Holbrooks.
Rather than calling the emergency services or trying to help the OAP, Ahmed drove home and "locked himself in his bedroom" until police eventually arrived at his home.
A member of Mr Forde's family said he was "left at the side of the road like a wild animal", while a judge said Ahmed's actions were "a cowardly and shameful thing to do".
Ahmed, 33, of King Edward Road, Hillfields was jailed for 22 months today at Warwick Crown Court having previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.
He was also banned from driving for 47 months.
Jailing Ahmed, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: “On the evening of May 12 - almost literally a year ago - you were driving in a residential area.
“It’s a busy area and you were driving at 49mph in a 30mph zone.”
He said that the "circumstances" of the evening - including that it had been raining - “called for caution - but you were driving without caution”.
Recorder Reynolds told Ahmed that the police investigation decided the “simple and devastating cause of the accident was your speed”.
He also spoke of the eyewitness having to take “evasive action” after Mr Forde had been struck and the fact that driver “saw what had happened and she, as any decent person would have done, stopped to try and help Mr Forde.
“You (Ahmed), in contrast, drove off thinking no doubt only about yourself. It was a cowardly and shameful thing to do.”
Recorder Reynolds said that Ahmed answered ‘no comment’ to questions in police interview and “when first committed to this court you did not indicate what your plea would be and you were challenging that you were driving this car”.
He added: “You only admitted this charge because the evidence shows there was nowhere to hide.
“It seems to me your remorse is more for you being caught than for what you did.”
Speaking about the victim in the case, Recorder Reynolds said: “Nothing I can do can bring back Mr Forde. Members of his family who are here and in the wider community will naturally look to the sentence I pass as if it some way measures the value of his life.
“It can’t and couldn’t, even if I was completely unrestrained."
“But in this case there are real restrictions on sentences I can pass upon you (Ahmed)."
The Recorder explained the maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving is five years and added: “The guidelines will seem pitifully inadequate but I have absolutely no choice but to be loyal to the guidelines that Government has set out.”
