Rob Tromans resigned as Warwickshire's deputy PCC in April, citing "personal reasons", and won a seat in last week's council elections.

He was questioned by police over an alleged assault on 22 March.

The Conservative Party said he has now had the party whip removed pending the results of the investigation.

Mr Tromans has not been arrested or charged over the incident, which allegedly happened in Nuneaton's Justice Walk Car Park, and has been asked for a comment.

He secured the St Nicolas ward for the Conservatives with 1,392 votes during last week's elections.

Staffordshire Police said it was asked by the Warwickshire force to investigate a report of an assault, and a 49-year-old man from the town had been voluntarily interviewed.

A statement from the office of the PCC said it would be "inappropriate" to comment on the status of any police investigations against any individual.

No case to answer for Nuneaton councillor at centre of assault probe

A police probe involving the Nuneaton-based former Warwickshire Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner has found no case to answer.

Staffordshire Police has confirmed that Rob Tromans will not face any police action.

In a statement, the force said: "Following an independent investigation by Staffordshire Police into an allegation of assault against the former Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire, Rob Tromans, no charges are to be brought.

"A file was submitted to the CPS who, having considered the evidence, concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support a prosecution."

Cllr Kris Wilson, the leader of the Tories, confirmed to CoventryLive that Cllr Tromans has been readmitted to the Conservative group and this now brings the Conservative numbers on the Town Hall back up to 16.

“The police Investigation, which has been conducted by another police force, has concluded and found that there is no evidence of a crime being committed and therefore no case to answer," Cllr Wilson said.

"No charges have ever been brought against Cllr Tromans and that his character and integrity remain – as always – intact, and he is welcome back into the Conservative group.

“Cllr Tromans will continue to vigorously stand up for the residents of St Nicolas, promote the Conservative policies that over 51 per cent of the residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth voted for, and hold Labour to account at the Town Hall."
