Hundreds of students were evacuated from their high-rise accommodation in Coventry city centre after a fire broke out.

Students living in Millennium View in Hales Street had to leave their flats at 4am on Wednesday because of a fire on the 10th floor.

Five fire engines and 23 firefighters were called to the blaze which forced the evacuation of all 11 floors.

It hasn’t been confirmed yet if the fire was caused by an electrical fault or whether it started elsewhere in the kitchen.

Pictures from overnight shows three of the fire engines at the scene with a group of students evacuated to the other side of the road outside the transport museum.

Nobody was hurt.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “We were called at 4.05am to the flats.

“We sent five appliances and around 23 firefighters in total.

“The fire was in the kitchen area of the 10th floor of 11 storeys.

“We used fire fighters in breathing apparatus, one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

“It was quite a serious incident as we had a number of appliances in attendance.

“The smoke covered two floors.”
