A man has been attacked and stabbed in a busy Coventry street this evening.

Police were called to Far Gosford Street by a shopkeeper who reported that the victim had been stabbed following a dispute nearby.

The road has been taped off since around 5.45pm between Drinks 4 You and the Costcutter store.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Officers are actively searching for the attacker and any witnesses who saw what happened.

"The victim was given first aid at the scene and is currently receiving hospital treatment.

"Inquiries are on-going and anyone with information which may help should call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. The information you provide may result in a reward."

It is understood that the man was stabbed in the back.

A photo taken at the scene shows a large number of people, including police and paramedics, surrounding somebody lying on the floor.

CCTV released after city centre stabbing leaves man with internal bleeding

Police have released CCTV images as they investigate a stabbing that left a man with internal bleeding.

The attack happened in Far Gosford Street, Coventry, on February 15 and also left the 20-year-old victim with injuries to his spleen and liver.

He spent over a week in hospital but has now made a full recovery.

Police previously stated that the stabbing happened at around 5.45pm and they were called by a local shopkeeper to reports of the man being stabbed following a dispute nearby.

The victim was given first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Detectives working on the case managed to obtain CCTV files from a nearby restaurant and a specialist digital team have been working to restore the files.

Officers, who believe the attack was unprovoked, have now released images of a man they believe could have vital information and are asking anyone who can help to come forward.

Det Con Rob Tilley, who is leading the investigation team, said: "We’ve finally been able to restore and access footage that captures the suspect walking past a restaurant shortly before the attack.

"We need to identify who this man is and I’d ask anyone who can assist to contact us immediately on 101."

Anyone who recognises the man or has any information is asked to call West Midlands Police on call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, and quote crime number 20CV/37054P/18.
