Armed police swooped on a street in Coventry this afternoon after reports that a man was in possession of a handgun.

A number of officers carrying guns and police vehicles were spotted in Falstaff Road, Tile Hill, shortly after 3pm. An eyewitness who contacted the Telegraph said that there were marked and unmarked vehicles in the street and the incident seemed to be based around one house in the suburban street located off Bushberry Avenue.

West Midlands Police said officers attended after receiving reports cars were racing and a man in one of the vehicles had a handgun.

Officers subsequently located the man but no handgun was found.

As yet no arrests have been made but two cars have been seized for further examination.

The police have also appealed for any members of the public with information to come forward.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police attended Falstaff Road after concerned members of the public reported that cars were racing and a man in one of the cars was in possession of a handgun.

“Police were immediately dispatched. The vehicle and the man in question were located, a search was conducted and no firearm was found in the car or in the surrounding area.

“At this time, no arrests have been made. Two vehicles have been seized by police for examination.

“Calls of this nature are always taken seriously and are thoroughly checked out by police.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 giving reference log 1288 of February 2.”
