Staff at the theatre, which today celebrates its fifth birthday, made the discovery on Wednesday, January 31, morning.

Ticket holders for upcoming events have been assured performances will take place as normal, including tonight’s show by folk band Fairport Convention.

Operations manager Robert Wimperis was one of the first to arrive at the venue and discover the damage.

He said: “The thieves smashed their way in through two sets of doors.

“The door to the office has been severely damaged and all our laptops and phones have been stolen.

“It’s really upsetting for the volunteers and staff who work so hard for The Albany Theatre Trust.

“It is frustrating in terms of time, money and commitment to get us up and running again.”

Chairman and chief executive David Meredith added he was shocked by the break-in.

“This is a kick in the teeth for everyone who supports us,” he said.

“It’s not the best way to celebrate our anniversary, but once again it’s brought the best out of everyone.

“Our volunteers were straight on the case with emergency repairs and we now have to work really hard to replace all the lost items.

“We have been touched by the messages of support from the people and businesses of Coventry.”

There was a very similar robbery at the then Technical College in 2005, it was probably the same gang. On that occasion they stole load of keyboards and mice which were absolutely worthless.
