Coventry University is being investigated after students’ confidential data was leaked to almost 2,000 people, the Telegraph can reveal.

The university has apologised for the security breach and insists no passwords, financial or residential information was revealed.

Confidential student information was leaked when an email attachment containing the details was circulated to 1,930 students in November 2017.

Students were only made aware of the breach this week in an email sent to those affected, and seen by the Telegraph.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has told the Telegraph it is investigating the apparent breach.

One student, who did not want to be named, told the Telegraph: “Although no bank details were leaked it strikes me as unbelievable that an organisation can so easily mess up and leak our private information.

“They have tried to stop us forwarding the email to keep this quiet.

“I think they deserve to be held to account, considering us students are all now technically paying customers.”
