The Broad Lane and Nod Rise junction are always busy

Coventry councillors are calling for a car park to be built to make a major road safer.

Below is an image of a car that collided with the wall of a Broad Lane dentist, driving into the sign.

The collision happened on Monday afternoon, but fortunately, nobody was injured.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was not called to the incident.

However, councillors from the Westwood ward and local residents are concerned for the safety of road users.

Cllr Peter Male said the main problem lies with the lack of parking for the dentists, so people park on the road, leaving little room for manoeuvre.

He said: “The collision happened at some time on Monday afternoon.

“I was passing so I am not sure how it happened.

“The car was travelling along Broad Lane out of the city, but went into the dentist wall and sign.

“The main problem is if the dentist is full, they have to park on the road.

“It causes problems for people.

“The only option we have is to extend the yellow lines.”

Cllr Male said the footpath where the car crashed is used regularly, and it was lucky nobody got hurt.

He added: “The junction is very busy, and the wall of the dentist was destroyed.

“It is a busy footpath so it is really lucky that there wasn’t anyone walking.

“It is difficult for us to approach the dentist but we would like them to build a car park.

“They have a large front and rear garden area for the car park.

“The only long-term solution is for the dentist to provide parking.

“That way the danger will decrease on the road as less people will park on it.

“But it is a dangerous road, they speed down there and don’t realise there is a sudden bend.

“For residents that live there have said it is dangerous, and there have been quite a few low level incidents.”

Practice Manager Maggie Mcleod said: "There have been two new bus stops which isn't helping traffic.

"We have good neighbours and we want to be part of the community.

"We've worked with police and the neighbours before and we don't want to do anything wrong.

"I would like him to contact me and talk to me about the issue."

'Dangerous' Broad Lane junction: Campaigners call for council action

Image

CAMPAIGNERS have called for Coventry council to take action over a ‘dangerous’ Broad Lane junction.

Coventry Conservatives have also branded the road in Eastern Green ‘an accident waiting to happen’.

Members of the Mount Nod Residents Association and Limbrick Wood Baptist Church have warned that the speed of vehicles is making it virtually impossible to cross the road safely.

Woodlands Conservative councillor, Julia Lepoidevin, has been hearing residents’ concerns.

She said they are particularly worried about the junction with Jardine Crescent.

She is also collecting a petition which has 160 signatures already, which she’ll present to council.

The petition calls on the council to install a pedestrian crossing at the junction and explore the feasibility of other safety measures along Broad Lane.

Local campaigners have been working with West Midlands Police to build up evidence of the problem through the community speedwatch initiative.

Over three sessions volunteers recorded more than 100 vehicles exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

The highest speed recorded was 49mph with average speed varying from 35- 39mph in each session.

Darren, who is a minister at Limbrick Wood Baptist Church, is backing the campaign and said: “It has been brought to my attention by both the young and old members of our community just how dangerous this junction is.

“Many say they feel like they are taking their lives in their hands to cross this road, and especially for drivers turning right out of Eastern Green Road onto Broad Lane.

“I personally have had numerous near misses with speeding drivers.”

Action to be taken on 'unsafe' Coventry crossing

Concerns over a lack of safe crossing on a busy Coventry road will be addressed with a new mobile vehicle activated speed sign.

A petition of 184 signatures requested a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Jardine Crescent and Broad Lane.

But a review found there had been no collisions near the site to prioritise one, a meeting of the Cabinet Member for City Services was told on Monday.

Cllr Tim Sawdon said he found it "a little bit bizarre that we wait for someone to be seriously injured, flattened or killed before we do something".

Cabinet member Cllr Jayne Innes said: "There's absolutely no occasion for suggesting that we wait for someone to be seriously hurt before we intervene.

"We look at where there are patterns of accidents around the city and target our interventions to those roads where we know there's evidence of a high risk.

"Instead a mobile vehicle activated speed sign will be installed."We are actually going to be buying in our new batch of signs," Cllr Innes added.

"You [Broad Lane] will be the first wave of when they go in."

A previously promised mobile vehicle activated sign on nearby Alderminster Road has still not been installed 12 months later.

Petition spokesman Councillor Julia Lepoidevin said she wanted "assurances" of when the Broad Lane sign would be in light of previous issues.

A date of when Alderminster Road will get its sign will be confirmed later this week, where a timescale for measures on Broad Lane will also be agreed.

'Not enough injuries' - why a Coventry road won't get new safety measures

Image

Safety measures are unlikely to be used on a road in Coventry because not enough people have been injured in collisions.

A petition of 77-signatures has demanded traffic calming measures including vehicle activated signs (VAS) on Broad Lane between Banner Lane and Coventry Road.

The petition is due to be heard on Monday, July 29. But an officer has said the road doesn’t meet the council’s criteria of six collisions in the last three years.

There have been two crashes on the road in that period.

Cllr Peter Male, who is supporting the petition, said: “Speeding is a major concern to our residents.

“It is a big stretch of road for parents going to the school.

“These are stretches of roads that need some sort of measure in place.

“The best thing about the vehicle activated speed cameras is that they gather data for a more permanent speeding restriction, and it is financially realistic.

“They have got this equipment and it can be used at various locations.

“Road humps are always a bit of a Marmite solution but this is a good option. The petition did not call for unrealistic measures.”

Use of personal injury collisions to assess where safety measures are introduced is used “to ensure the funding we have is utilised carefully”, council officer Caron Archer said in a report.

“The location will continue to be monitored as part of the annual citywide personal recorded injury collision study,” she added.

“Alternative types of rumble strips are currently being investigated and it is proposed once a feature of this type is identified, it is trialled this section of Broad Lane.”

Cabinet member for city services Cllr Pet Hetherton will discuss the bid on Monday.

Rumble strips for road where 'not enough people are injured'

Speeding on a busy Coventry road will be tackled with new rumble strips, while it could also get temporary vehicle activated signs.

Cabinet member for city services Cllr Pat Hetherton agreed to the measures on Broad Lane between Banner Lane and Coventry Road at a meeting on Monday, July 29.

It came following a petition of 77 signatures calling for action.

Ward councillor Peter Male had previously criticised an officer’s report which recommended against using the new vehicle activated sign (VAS) as it didn’t meet the council’s criteria.

Council officer Caron Archer previously said there had been two collisions on the road that resulted in injury in the last three years, below the council’s criteria of six.

“We do have more sites than funding,” she added on Monday.

“We have over 50 sites where there’s over six or more personal injury collisions occurring in a three-year period so we do have to look at these sites first.”

But Cllr Julia Lepoidevin, speaking in Cllr Male’s absence, said it was “unfortunate” the council uses personal injury as a measure.

“If you were to take into consideration the number of accidents that do happen we might have a much clearer picture,” she added.

Ms Archer said reported personal injury collisions ensure the city is on a “level playing field”, as not all damage only incidents are reported to police.

However she added the road can be put on the mobile VAS programme for a future date, but could not give any assurances as to when that would be.

In the meantime, an ‘alternative form of rumble strips’ will be placed on the road as part of a new trial, but the council is yet to identify what this will be.

Traditional rumble strips will not be used as they are too noisy, Ms Archer said.

Cllr Lepoidevin added: “Although the rumble strips would be fine going one way, it is the other way too.

“If you take the roundabout at Banner Lane and Broad Lane to where you go out, both ways have an issue with speeding.

“I firmly believe VAS would be really good there.”
