A Coventry mum says she was left distraught after reportedly finding her five-year-old daughter wandering out of school alone.

Carley Currie, from Willenhall , picked her daughter Layla up from a weekly dance class at her primary school on Tuesday at 4.15pm and claims she found her daughter had almost made it out of the school gates.

The 27-year-old mum claimed: “She was literally about a step away from leaving the school grounds.

“Where the gate is there is a main road - if she’d have taken three or more steps she would be in the road.

“We’ve taught her about road safety but you can’t trust a five-year-old’s judgement. She could have made a wrong move and it could have been very serious.”

Willenhall Community Primary School said the dance teacher who uses the hall is from a private organisation.

Carley said her daughter usually waits inside the school building until she is picked up, but this time she found her child waiting outside.

Upon reportedly finding her daughter outside the school hall, Carley said she went straight to the headteacher to ask why she was let out.

Carley claims she was told by the headteacher that the dance teacher is not a member of her staff and therefore not her responsibility.

“The head said it was an outside person coming in to run the class,” Carley said. “I said she’s in your school teaching her class and the head said she was not the school’s responsibility.”

Carley told the Telegraph that Layla will no longer be going to the dance class.

“It was the head’s decision to ban her from going to the dance class again but, to be honest, after this I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving her there anyway,” Carley said.

“I’ve sent a letter of complaint to the school governors.

“I want something done about it.”

“I warned parents that they might want to turn up five minutes earlier to pick their kids up,” she said.

The school decided not to comment on the incident. A spokesperson said: “The dance club that uses our school hall is a private organisation therefore the school has no comment.”

The Telegraph contacted the dance teacher but she said she did not wish to make any comment on the claims.
