Fire crews tackle double decker bus blaze in Coventry

Fire crews were called to Keresley this afternoon to reports of a bus on fire.

The fire started at around 4.30pm on Keresley Road near to The Wallace pub.

Two fire crews from West Midlands Fire Service were called to the scene and tackled the blaze. They confirmed that nobody was injured.

Photos circulated on social media show the back half of the number 16 double decker bus engulfed by flames and smoke billowing from the scene.

Keresley Road was closed between Tamworth Road and Norman Place Road whilst officers tackled the blaze causing heavy traffic in the area.

The fire was put out shortly after 5pm.

Second No 16 incident in months sparks road safety concerns

A stretch of Keresley Road remained closed today following yesterday’s bus fire - as a councillor voiced his concerns about road safety on the busy stretch of road.

Fire crews were called to Keresley Road near to The Wallace pub following reports a No 16 National Express bus had caught fire at around 4.30pm.

In the wake of the blaze Cllr Glenn Williams (Ind, Bablake) expressed relief no one was hurt but also concern that this was the second serious incident involving a No 16 bus in a matter of months - and the seventh accident on Keresley Road in three years.

In March a No 16 bus collided with a house on Keresley Road causing major damage, though again no one was injured.

Cllr Williams said: “Road safety is a big concern of residents.

“I have done a community speed watch with residents and police have done a covert one too in a resident’s house, which was not enforceable but was valuable in terms of monitoring.”

Councillor Williams said double yellow lines had recently been put down and people were hopeful they would reduce issues around parking and road safety.

He said he was relieved no one had been injured in either of the bus incidents but said the fact they happened was alarming.

“It must have been a horrendous experience both times but it does seem really bad that this is happening,” he added.

“Fortunately the March incident happened at 7am but if it had been later when children were going to school who knows what could have happened.”

A Coventry City Council spokesman confirmed part of Keresley Road road remained closed today following the fire.

He said: “The reason is they used sand to help when dealing with the fire and this has to be removed by a specialist contractor because it gets contaminated in the fire.

“We are expecting the contractor on site by lunchtime and we are hoping the road will re-open later this afternoon.”

Cause of Keresley bus fire revealed

The cause of the bus fire that brought Keresley to a standstill last week has been revealed.

It has now emerged the cause of the blaze was in fact related to a mechanical malfunction in the bus engine.

A spokesman for National Express said: “The vehicle fire on Keresley Road on 7 November 2017 was related to a mechanical malfunction in the bus engine bay.

“That bus had passed its latest 28-day inspection and its fire risk assessment was in date.

“We have briefed our engineering teams and put additional steps into our inspection and monitoring procedures to prevent such an incident occurring again.”

In other news, investigators have revealed that a flat tyre is often caused by a puncture!
