Armed police were called to Coventry city centre today after reports of somebody carrying a gun inside West Orchards Shopping Centre.

Officers arrived at around 5.40pm and spoke to a group of youths in Ironmonger Row near to the shopping centre's rear entrance and a BB gun was retrieved from one of them.

One eyewitness saw firearms officers arrive in the city centre street in two unmarked vehicles and question the group.

He said: "One male was detained away from the rest of the group. It seemed to be quite calm but passers-by were curious about the sudden arrival."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Police were called to reports of a youth carrying a firearm at West Orchards Shopping Centre at around 5.40pm this evening.

“A group of youths was spoken to by police and one of them was found to be in possession of a BB gun, which he handed over to the officers.
