Cops and fire crews are stepping up patrols across Nuneaton and Bedworth in the run-up to Bonfire Night to make sure that it does not go off with a nasty bang.

Notoriously the borough is the small fires and arson capital of Warwickshire, so there is extra focus to make sure that the Bonfire weekend passes trouble-free.

As of today and until Sunday, there will be both patrols in the day and in the night.

The Bicycle Intervention Knowledge and Education (BIKE) team will be out during daylight hours to not only put out any small fires but to also spread the word about the dangers of starting fires.

The Small Fires Unit, which is manned by firefighters supported by police officers, will then be out at night, in what are known as ‘high risk’ areas. Again, the team will be chatting to any groups of youths as well as be on hand to put out any small fires.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We will be stepping up our patrols within the community over the next few days.

“The small fires units will also be out during the evenings and the BIKE team, which is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner, will also be on patrol during the day.”
