Disruption warning as Coventry station masterplan works beginCOVENTRY station’s redevelopment works are set to begin – and the council has warned of disruption.
Commuters have been told to leave extra time for their journeys with a walkway and an entrance to the station set to close.
Coventry City Council chiefs have announced that the first phase of the so-called masterplan works have begun.
This includes constructing a new footbridge and improvements to existing platform canopies.
As part of the work, the council is set to close the steps on Warwick Road and the walkway from the station to the car park at Central 6 retail park.
Chiefs say the closure will take place from Monday, August 5. We have asked the council how long it is expected to be in place.
It will mean commuters will have to walk down Warwick Road, past Eaton House – the tall building – and access the station past the new council building (where Coffee #1 is), chiefs say.
They warn this could take about five minutes, so have asked commuters to allow extra time for journeys.
They also add that from August 5, 12 disabled car parking spaces will also be relocated from the station forecourt to the existing multi-storey car park no.1, which can be accessed via Station Square.
Finally, they say the cycle shelter closest to the platform in the short stay car park area will be moved to a temporary location in front of the station while the work is carried out.
They have also reminded residents there is an undercover cycle hub located near to the British Transport Police.
The disruption is due to piling works taking place on Warwick Road.
The piling will form part of the foundations for the new station building, the council says, and will allow the construction of an access tunnel under Warwick Road – connecting the new building to the bus interchange.
The council says a second station building with shops, a new multi-storey car park and a ticket office, as well as a bus interchange on the Central 6 side, will follow soon.
