The major scheme will include creating a second footbridge to connect all four platforms

New images have been released of the £82 million Coventry railway station masterplan which will transform part of the city centre.

The planning application for the multi-million pound plans to regenerate the fastest growing station outside London are to be submitted to Coventry City Council later this year to create a new-look gateway for the millions of passengers who arrive in the city by train each year.

Coventry City Council is working on the project in partnership with Network Rail, Virgin Trains and other rail operators, Transport for West Midlands, Friargate Coventry LLP and other stakeholders.

The project has received funding from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP), the Department for Transport and some borrowing while funding is also being requested from the West Midlands Combined Authority Devolution Deal.

The major scheme will include creating a second footbridge to connect all four platforms and extend the platforms, a second entrance onto Warwick Road with step-free access to all platforms and a multi-storey car-park for 644 vehicles.

A bus interchange will also be built connected to the station building via a new access tunnel under Warwick Road.

A new platform will increase services to twice an hour between Nuneaton and Coventry and road improvements will involve building a new road connecting Central Six Retail Park to the ring road and improvements to reduce congestion on Warwick Road.

Drop-in sessions to discuss the plans have been arranged at Coventry Station on Wednesday, November 8 between 3.30pm to 6pm, Thursday, November 9 from 7.30am to 10am and on Saturday, November 11 from 10am to 2pm.

The plans can also be seen and discussed at Mach Health & Fitness at Central Six Retail Park in Warwick Road, Coventry, on Wednesday, November 15 from 4pm to 6pm and on Thursday, November 16 between noon to 2pm.

The Central Library in Smithford Way in Coventry city centre is the location on Monday, November 6 from 10am to 2pm to also look at the proposals.

How it looked in 1839. This is the view looking towards Warwick Road bridge. The water tower, engine shed and fluted water column on the left and the stationmaster's house on the right survived until the present station was built. The tall chimney on the left was for drying sand in a kiln.

Big changes as cost of Coventry station masterplan spirals

The plans to expand and improve Coventry's Railway Station are being ripped up as costs for the project spiral.

A recent tendering exercise for a footbridge and canopies "demonstrated significant inflation in the rail sector" and has forced Coventry City Council to review the costs for the entire project.

The scheme - which will see the 1960s station transformed with a new station entrance onto Warwick Road, shops, a multi-storey car park, bus interchange and new highway infrastructure - was approved in 2015 at a cost of £82million.

But the authority says big changes will have to be made to keep the scheme within budget and "de-risk" the project.

It will also be brought forward to make sure it is ready for travellers heading to Coventry during its year as City of Culture in 2021 - something else that will see costs spiral.

A report prepared for the council's Cabinet, which will discuss the proposed changes a meeting on Tuesday, July 17, said "it has become apparent that construction costs under this programme are at risk of significant inflation driven by pressures in the rail sector".

To keep the overall programme in line with the £82million funding, the following is being proposed:

    * The removal of the southern section of a planned western link road connecting Central Six Retail Park to the ring road

    * 385 parking spaces being taken out of action during the construction of the new car park and bus interchange

    * The size of the bus interchange itself could be reduced

    * The pedestrian boulevard could be extended

Yet another vanity project by the council hits the buffers

Our council are trying to live a champagne lifestyle on beer money. It's ludicrous. Time that they realised where Coventry fits in and adopted an appropriate style. But let's be fair, how many of our councillors have a clue about real life?

Disruption warning as Coventry station masterplan works begin

Image

COVENTRY station’s redevelopment works are set to begin – and the council has warned of disruption.

Commuters have been told to leave extra time for their journeys with a walkway and an entrance to the station set to close.

Coventry City Council chiefs have announced that the first phase of the so-called masterplan works have begun.

This includes constructing a new footbridge and improvements to existing platform canopies.

As part of the work, the council is set to close the steps on Warwick Road and the walkway from the station to the car park at Central 6 retail park.

Chiefs say the closure will take place from Monday, August 5. We have asked the council how long it is expected to be in place.

It will mean commuters will have to walk down Warwick Road, past Eaton House – the tall building – and access the station past the new council building (where Coffee #1 is), chiefs say.

They warn this could take about five minutes, so have asked commuters to allow extra time for journeys.

They also add that from August 5, 12 disabled car parking spaces will also be relocated from the station forecourt to the existing multi-storey car park no.1, which can be accessed via Station Square.

Finally, they say the cycle shelter closest to the platform in the short stay car park area will be moved to a temporary location in front of the station while the work is carried out.

They have also reminded residents there is an undercover cycle hub located near to the British Transport Police.

The disruption is due to piling works taking place on Warwick Road.

The piling will form part of the foundations for the new station building, the council says, and will allow the construction of an access tunnel under Warwick Road – connecting the new building to the bus interchange.

The council says a second station building with shops, a new multi-storey car park and a ticket office, as well as a bus interchange on the Central 6 side, will follow soon.

Residents can submit questions about the plans to stationmasterplan@coventry.gov.uk
