The driver of a car, which police believe had false number plates, fled the scene after hitting a telegraph pole and going on to collide with a garden wall in Potters Green this afternoon.

A stretch of Ringwood Highway was closed for several hours following the collision until emergency telecommunications repairs could be carried out.

The Vauxhall Astra was travelling along Yewdale Crescent shortly after 12.30pm when it collided with a telegraph pole at the junction with Ringwood Highway, before careering into a garden wall opposite.

The collision saw the telegraph pole left leaning at a precarious angle, with cabling strewn across the road.

Part of the wall, a driveway wall between two bungalows, was demolished.

Ringwood Highway was closed as soon as police arrived at the scene, due to the disconnected and loose cabling, between the junction with Shilton Lane and stores close to the junction with Yewdale Crescent.

The stretch of road remained closed for several hours until telecoms engineers were able to make both the telegraph pole and cabling safe.

The closure saw bus services affected too, with National Express’s 8A bus terminating at Potters Green instead of travelling on to Wood End.

John Fraser, one of the homeowners whose wall was damaged by the out-of-control car, told the Telegraph he had been walking his dog nearby when he heard a screech of brakes and a smash.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police were called at 12.37pm to Ringwood Highway, Coventry, where a Vauxhall Astra had collided with a lamp post.

“The vehicle was believed to be carrying false number plates. The driver of the vehicle ran away from area. He was described as a white male, wearing a green or grey tracksuit.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact us on 101 giving reference 1023 11/10.”
