A Coventry councillor has called on the culprits who have been setting fire to areas in Wood End to come forward.

Firefighters from Foleshill were called out several times on Wednesday night to a spate of arsons - wasting their resources.

They were first called at 7.30pm with calls continuing until after midnight.

The fires were purposely lit and firefighters have now hit out at those who waste valuable time and resources of the fire service.

Cllr David Skinner, Conservative councillor for Westwood Ward, has urged those to come forward who have information.

Cllr Skinner has also praised the work of the firefighters who go out and fight those fires.

He said: “The irresponsible people doing this should note the words of a firefighter; ‘What if a more serious fire comes in and we are going to be delayed because we are called out to these?’

“We are all fortunate to have such brave men and women to protect us and we should listen to them.

“I know from direct personal experience the enormous speed at which fire can spread, and this irresponsible behaviour could cause great harm to innocent people.

“I hope that anyone with useful information will contact the relevant authorities.”

Firefighters at Foleshill Fire Station also hit out at those deliberately setting fire to rubbish.

They said: “It is a bit of a waste of resources where we are attending small purposely lit fires.

“What if a more serious fire comes in and we are going to be delayed because we are called out to these?

“Last night we were called to several incidents in Wood End where people were deliberately setting fire to piles of rubbish.

“We were first called around the time the kids were out playing around 7.30pm and were still being called out after midnight.”

The crews were called out to Binton Road, Loxley Close and Lillington Road all in the space of just a few hours.
