Man jailed after horrific injuries suffered by OAP in savage road rage attack

Richard Bennett has been jailed after a court heard he repeatedly smashed a car door into the OAP’s arm after the “red mist descended” - leaving his victim with potentially lifelong scarring



Bennett – previously a man of good character – flagged down the 69-year-old driver in Coundon Street, Radford, on September 14 last year.

He then grabbed hold of the driver’s door as he tried to get out of the car and repeatedly crushed it against his arm and leg.

Warwick Crown Court heard that Bennett then hurled abuse at the pensioner before pushing him over and fleeing the scene.

The 36-year-old was identified as the attacker and interviewed by police officers, when he claimed the other driver had nearly caused an accident and he wanted to speak to him about putting him and his passengers’ safety at risk.

He denied repeatedly slamming the car door against the victim and claimed that he fell over, which could have caused the injuries.

But officers secured a number of witness statements to paint a true picture what happened.

Bennett, of Villiers Street, Stoke, admitted wounding at Warwick Crown Court on Thursday, September 14, and was jailed for four years.

Det Con Sarah Vaughan, from West Midlands CID, said: “This was a cowardly and needless attack which left a pensioner with significant injuries.

“Bennett was previously a man of good character but the red mist descended on him after becoming agitated by another driver.

“There can be no excuse for such a level of violence and this prison sentence should act as a strong warning that incidents of road rage will not be tolerated.”
