A nursery attached to Nuneaton’s only fee-paying school has been slammed by Ofsted inspectors and branded ‘inadequate’.

Babies being left uncomforted, using feeding spoons that had been left on the floor and hindering learning by interrupting play are just some of the catalogue of educational errors uncovered at Milverton Nursery School.

The Lutterworth Road-based place of care was previously rated as ‘good’ but, following an Ofsted inspection last month, it has now been branded ‘inadequate’ in all four categories – effectiveness of the leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare, and outcomes for children.

In her report, Ofsted inspector Anne Clift states: “Children’s emotional well-being is at risk. Poor staff deployment means that staff working alone with babies unable to comfort them when they become distressed. This also upsets other children.

“Children’s independence is hindered because staff do not encourage them to have a go at simple tasks themselves.”

The report also says: “Poor staff development means that seven children under the age of two are regularly left in the care of one member of staff outdoors. This compromises children’s safety, care and learning needs.”

Finally it concludes: “Inconsistencies in teaching have a negative impact on the progress children make. They are not well prepared for the next steps in their learning or their eventual school.”

There is now a six point action plan that the nursery has to follow to make the improvements needed by Ofsted.
