The proposed development would replace a car dealership

A new 222 bedroom student accommodation block could be built on the site of a former art deco pub in Canley.

The proposed building would be located on the Fletchamstead Highway, replacing the existing Auto Choice car dealership site.

The car dealership has stood since 2009, but prior to that, the site was home to an art deco pub called The Fletch.

Named after the historical Fletchamstead Hall, the pub opened in 1937, and had eye-catching glasswork and a distinctive art deco style.

In later years the back room turned into a music venue, before the pub finally closed in 2008.

But before any development can take place, further research is needed on the site, as a Preliminary Unexploded Ordnance Threat Assessment highlights the site as high risk, in part due to the discovery of an unexploded World War Two bomb in nearby Henry Boteler Road in 2012.

Warwickshire based Sykes Planning Ltd have submitted a planning application, which states: “The applicants seek detailed planning permission to demolish the existing buildings on site and erect a new building providing 222 student bedrooms and associated facilities.

“The proposal would provide a range of high quality, purpose-built, student accommodation.

“The rooms would be arranged in 31 clusters of either 6, 7, 8 and 9 bedrooms (including ‘accessible’ bedrooms), each with en-suite facilities. Each cluster would have a shared kitchen and dining area and communal staircases will provide access to all floors.

“The layout and cluster approach is designed to foster a better community spirit.

"A wider sense of community is also encouraged through the provision of shared external space and a student common room at third floor, which would have panoramic views towards the City Centre.”

The application draws upon the “ambitious plans” that Coventry City Council have for the city, and seeks to provide a solution to housing the ever growing number of students in the city.

Plans are currently in the consultation stage, which runs until September 29.

Auto Choice are said to be looking to relocate elsewhere in the city.

Had many a good lunchtime in there. :)
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Residents furious as plan for 210 student flats has less than 30 parking spaces

Residents are furious at plans for 210 student flats which have just 26 parking spaces.

Homeowners in the Standard Avenue area have said they already struggling to park and the new accommodation will make matters worse.

A petition has been signed by more than 200 residents objecting the build.

The planned Fletchamstead Highway student flats would be built on the Auto Choice car dealership site.

The car dealership has stood since 2009, but prior to that, the site was home to an art deco pub called The Fletch.

Named after Fletchamstead Hall, the pub opened in 1937, and had eye-catching glasswork and a distinctive art deco style.

In later years the back room turned into a music venue, before the pub finally closed in 2008.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said at the minute, they sometimes have to park up to 30 doors away.

"My biggest issue with the planning is they are only planning for 20 to 30 spaces for 210 flats.

"There isn't much we can do but we have enough problems as it is."

Another resident has said the area is already overstretched and it wouldn't cope with the proposed accommodation.

They've also said they believe the accommodation will add nothing to the community.

Councillors in the Westwood ward are calling for the council to reject the plans.

The proposed plan looks to demolish the current Autochoice site and build a new building providing 210 student bedrooms and associated facilities.

Rooms would be arranged in 29 clusters of either four, six, seven, eight and nine bedrooms - including accessible rooms - with ensuite facilities.

Each cluster will have a shared kitchen and dining area, and the building will include a communal lounge, cycle storage for 213 bikes and parking for 26 vehicles.

Public consultation runs until May 4.

Popular old pub will be demolished to make way for student flats

A once popular boozer will be demolished to make way for a new student accommodation block - despite furious opposition from residents.

The old art deco Fletch pub - now home to the Auto Choice car dealership on Fletchamstead Highway - will become home to 210 students after members of Coventry City Council's planning committee voted to approve the development on June 14.

It was once a popular live music venue that even hosted the likes of Coventry legend Hazel O'Connor.

The approval came despite more than 300 residents signing a petition to stop the student block going ahead over fears of anti-social behavior in the area and the impact it would have on parking.

The new student block will be built between two-and-a-half and six storeys high and will contain 210 bedrooms for students with ensuites.

As well as a large garden and quiet study room, the development will feature a distinctive rotunda fronting the A45.

A large cycle store will also be built with 213 spaces and there will be 26 off-street parking spaces.

A previous application submitted for a student block providing 222 bedrooms was scrapped to allow an improved design after advice from the council - and a petition signed by more than 200 residents associated with it scrapped, leading to anger in the community.
