INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into a devastating blaze at the former home of Bedworth rugby club.

Images posted by Bedworth Fire Station on Facebook show the charred inside of Bedworth Rugby Club following the fire yesterday morning (Friday, August 25).

The crew were at the scene for almost three hours tackling the fire which engulfed the roof of the disused building in Smarts Road

They had to use a hose reel while wearing breathing apparatus to stop the fire spreading further.

Police are investigating the cause of the blaze and are keen to hear from anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area.

Inspector Russell Payne of Warwickshire Police said: "Thankfully, no injuries have been reported but we have reason to believe that there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.

"We have launched a thorough investigation to establish the cause of the fire and determine if it was caused deliberately.

"If you witnessed this incident, or have any information, we would urge you to come forward. Whether you believe this information is important or not, it could prove vital in our enquiries."

Back in April the News reported that the future of the club, which was home to the rugby club, Bedworth Bowls Club and Bedworth Radio Controlled Car Club, was under-threat. It then closed and it is understood that land had been earmarked for housing.

Anyone with any information about the fire should call police on 101, quoting incident 99 of August 25.

Details can also be passed on via the Crimestoppers hotline, which is free to call from a landline and confidential, on 0800 555 111 or via https://crimestoppers-uk.org
