Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died following a reported altercation in Nuneaton town centre on Saturday afternoon.

Police were called just after 1pm to reports of an altercation in Harefield Road between two men, believed to be known to each other.

Shortly after the incident, one of the men - a man in his 60s - was taken ill and taken to Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital.

He received treatment in hospital and was initially reported as being in a critical condition but later died.

A police spokesman said: “The man, in his 60s, was taken ill shortly after the incident and was taken to the George Eliot Hospital where he sadly died.”

A 46-year-old man who was arrested near to the scene, initially on suspicion of assault, has now been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

The man who died has not been named but Warwickshire Police confirmed his family had been notified.

A police spokesman said a post-mortem examination would take place in due course and a file was being prepared for the coroner.

Warwickshire Police have renewed an appeal which urged anyone who witnessed the altercation to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Daniel Freeman said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident, or saw the two people involved beforehand, to come forward and speak to police.

“Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident 221 of 15 July or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org .”

A man has been charged with causing actual bodily harm - nearly a year after the victim died.

Detectives investigating the death of Peter Spiers from Nuneaton have summoned a man to appear in court.

Peter Spiers, 66, died in hospital following what police termed an “altercation” in the town centre on Saturday July 15.

He was taken to the George Eliot hospital after the incident in Market Place, Nuneaton.

That day police were called just after 1pm to reports of an altercation in Harefield Road between two men, believed to be known to each other.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: "Detectives investigating the death of Peter Spiers from Nuneaton have requisitioned a man to appear in court to face a charge of causing actual bodily harm.

"Mr Spiers, 66, died following an altercation in Market Place, Nuneaton, on 15 July 2017.

"The 47-year-old man from Nuneaton will appear at Warwickshire Magistrates Court tomorrow (June 20 2018)."

Peter went to Swinnerton School in Nuneaton and went on to do an engineering apprenticeship with Webster and Bennett before moving on to work for Rolls Royce where his father had also worked.

He worked until his late 50s when he retired and became his mother’s full-time carer.

He was never married and had one brother Joseph, 70, and two sisters, Carole, 74, and Irene, 71.

Carole Taylor, Peter’s older sister, told CoventryLive last year: “He was a very caring brother and son, he was the chief carer for my mother.

“He had a very individual character and he did his best for his mother, he always looked after my mother.

“He had a lovely childhood, our parents gave us everything, they didn’t have much but they gave us everything we needed.”

The 47-year-old man from Nuneaton will appear at Warwickshire Magistrates Court tomorrow (20 June 2018).
