A married man crashed into a police car and then a lamppost as he tried to flee from officers who had seen a woman get into his car in Coventry’s red light district.

Officers then waited for Petrica Ivan to return to his home address and arrested him after he tried to run and hide in a nearby garden.

He then failed to take a breath test properly while in police custody, but still gave a reading of almost twice the drink-drive limit.

Ivan, 32, of Hampton Road, Foleshill, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police, failing to provide a specimen of breath and driving without insurance or a licence.

He was given a ten-months jail term suspended for two years and ordered to do 120 hours unpaid work, as well as being banned from driving for 18 months.

Sentencing Ivan, Recorder Anthony Potter told him: “You drove a vehicle you knew you had no right to drive because you don’t have a full licence.

“When you were stopped by the police, not once but three times you attempted to evade them. In what I am prepared to accept was your panic, you collided with another car, and an officer had to jump out of the way.

“Although, thankfully, no-one was injured, this could have had a significantly different outcome. It was a disgraceful piece of driving.

“But I have regard to the fact that, although you have a criminal history in Romania, you appear to have worked diligently in this country, paid your taxes and been a model citizen.”
