Swift justice was served on a would-be burglar caught in the act in Coventry city centre.

Police were called to reports of a break-in in progress at Generation Barber Shop, in Far Gosford Street, at around 5am on Tuesday.

Officers arrived within four minutes and arrested Edward Burke.

He was charged with entering as a trespasser with intent to steal and going equipped for theft with screwdrivers, torches, a small metal bar and gloves.

The unemployed 54-year-old appeared at Coventry Magistrates’ Court the same day where his address was given as Riley Square, Bell Green.

He pleaded guilty to both offences and was jailed for 14 weeks.

Burke - who police had stated lived in Hillfields - was also ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
