An attraction at Staffordshire theme park Drayton Manor has been closed following a serious incident this afternoon.

Firefighters from Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service are assisting police and park staff with an incident at the Splash Canyon ride.

Drayton Manor said in its Twitter feed that the ride had been closed and that emergency services and the park’s staff were assisting with the incident.

Emergency services are understood to have been alerted after reports of a child in difficulty in the water.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said in a statement that it could confirm it was called to reports of a patient in the water at 2.18pm.

“An ambulance, a senior paramedic officer, a paramedic area support officer, a rapid response paramedic, a community first responder and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire were sent to the scene. The first resource was on scene within seven minutes,” it said.

The incident comes almost two years to the day since The Smiler accident at sister Staffordshire theme park Alton Towers.
