A dog owner is desperate for witnesses after his beloved pet was injured by a hit and run driver.

Ben Handy, 27, from Coventry, is searching for anyone who saw his dog hit by a car in Ansty Road on Saturday.

Riley, a 10-month old golden Labrador cross was hit by a car yesterday morning.

“I just thought it was shocking,” Ben said.

“With no one to blame, the fact that they didn’t stop and check if the dog is okay, it’s completely wrong.”

Ben was out at the time but at about 10.30am, a loud noise shocked his partner who was in the house while Riley was thought to be in the garden.

“My partner first heard what sounded like a lorry beeping followed by the screech of brakes. Naturally you go and have a look and she saw the dog on the side of the road,” Ben said.

“He was lying in the middle of the lay by and there was no one around.”

The incident has angered Ben who is thankful that the situation wasn’t much worse.

He added: “If my partner didn’t hear it then my dog could have been left out there to die on the side of the road.

“It’s not a very good thing to think about but fortunately my partner heard it and could rush straight over there to help him.”

Ben believes that Riley must have somehow managed to get the lock off the gate and squeezed through before going to explore.

As she went to look to see what had happened, Ben’s partner noticed that Riley was not in the garden and called Ben to let him know the dog was missing.

Just a few minutes later she called again to say he had been hit by a car.

Ben added: “She rang me and said at first the dog has gone missing and then she called me back and said he had been hit by a car, I was on the M40 and I turned around and came straight back.

“My dad lives next door and came straight out and got him to the vets.”

The vets said that Riley had not broken any bones but are concerned about the possibility he could have internal bleeding.

Ben is having to keep an eye on his pet and take him back to the vets for another check up tomorrrow.

He added: “He usually eats anything but he has been a bit off, normally you put his biscuits in front of him and he’ll eat them straight away but he’s not been as keen, he’s not been drinking as much either, if he gets up on his feet he will not walk about until we come and help him.

“It might just be the shock.”

Following the incident, Ben is now looking for witnesses as the only people around were some builders who said all they saw was a car slam its brakes on and speed off.

Ben said: “I want to find out if anybody saw anything or has CCTV or dashcam footage, we are looking for any details.

“I just want to find out why they didn’t stop.

“I also want to make people aware that if you knock over a dog, it’s illegal not to stop, I don’t think people realise that.”

This is a rather one sided article. OK, the guy hitting the dog ought to have stopped.

However, the driver was 'wronged' by hitting a dog that hadn't ought to have been running free in the first place.

The owner (and his partner) need take responsibility for their dog possibly causing damage to someone's car.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
