Robert Bullock, 62, known as Bob, was attacked by the men in Brinklow, during the afternoon of 25 April.

Police said he had lost sight in one eye and appealed with his family for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

A man, aged 23, from Coventry, has been arrested and bailed over the matter.

'Healthy and fit'

Mr Bullock is in hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.

His family said in a statement he had been a healthy, fit man.

"We cannot believe this has happened to us. Please help us find out who did this to Bob," they said.

About 150 houses on Mr Bullock's milk round in Coventry have been visited by officers investigating the case.

Det Ch Insp James Essex said police were keen to piece together the whereabouts of a black Ford Focus, registration number V718 EV0, thought to have been used by the men at the time of the attack.

Hammer found

The car was seen on Saturday, 24 April, at 0930 BST, in Rugby on the day before it was reported stolen from outside a property in Attoxall Road, Coventry.

Mr Bullock is thought to have disturbed three men near his car in Walkers Terrace, Brinklow, at about 1500 BST on 25 April.

The men, all wearing balaclavas, hit him with an unknown object before driving off in the Ford Focus towards Ansty. A hammer was found at the scene.

The car was abandoned and set alight near the canal close to the Greyhound Public House in Longford, Coventry. It was found on 28 April.
