Two Coventry doctor surgeries have been branded “inadequate” by inspectors.

The Cheylesmore Surgery in Quinton Park, Cheylesmore, and Dr Banerjee’s practice at the Willenhall Primary Care Centre in Remembrance Road, Willenhall are both failing according to the Care Quality Commission.

They were inspected last year by staff at the commission who have just released reports.

The report on the Cheylesmore Surgery says patients were at risk because patients taking high risk medicines were not being recorded properly.

Inspectors who visited Dr Banjeree’s surgery said not all staff had the skills, knowledge and experience needed and recruitment procedures for temporary doctors needed to be improved.

Janet Williamson, deputy chief inspector of General Practice and Dentistry in CQC’s Central region said: “It is important that the people who are registered with these practices can rely on getting the high quality care which everyone is entitled to receive from their GP.

“Inspectors found these services were failing to provide the level of care people should be able to expect.

“We found a number of concerns at these services and as a result of our findings all three services have been rated Inadequate and placed into special measures.

“We will continue to monitor these practices and we will inspect again in six months to check whether improvements have been made.

“I am hopeful that the practices will do what is required for the sake of their patients, but if we find that any of these services remain inadequate, we will consider taking further action.”

Ruth Light, chief officer of Healthwatch Coventry said: “All Coventry residents need to have access to good quality, patient friendly GP services. The current variation is unfair and unhelpful for public health.

“It is worrying for patients when GP practices are rated inadequate. Over the next six months these GP practices will receive extra support to address the issues highlighted by the CQC around leadership and safety.”

Dr Banerjee’s practice is one of two practices based at the Willenhall Primary Care Centre. The other practice is not affected.

Coventry GP surgery now in better health after previously rated as 'inadequate'

A doctors' surgery which last year was rated inadequate now has a better inspection report with a good rating.

The Cheylesmore Surgery has services which are safe, effective caring and responsive to the needs of patients according to the report from government agency the Care Quality Commission.

The Cheylesmore Surgery shares a base with Quinton Park Medical Centre which is a separate operation and not mentioned in these Care Quality Commission reports.

The report went on to say the surgery in Quinton Park provided a good service to older people with visits to care homes and meetings with Macmillan nurses.

They were impressed patients could book appointments online and they praised the health screening programmes.

The inspectors highlighted how some of the staff have had training in working with people with dementia.

They mentioned that a hearing loop had been installed at the reception to make communication easier for deaf patients.

And there were special arrangements for sharing the medical history of vulnerable patients who need out of hours care.

In autumn last year the surgery was rated inadequate.

Dr Manjit Jaspal of the Cheylesmore Surgery said: “We are delighted with the report and the team at Cheylesmore surgery have worked very hard this past six months to ensure that we get a good report from the re-inspection from the CQC.

“However we would like to comment that in time of crisis in general practice with especially recruitment and retention of GPs and practice nurses having a report like this added extra stresses and strains that the practice could’ve done without but nevertheless the practice had to ensure that we passed the regulator’s requirements.

“We are especially delighted that around 4,000 patients on repeat prescriptions had their medication reviews done in last six months as well as our vulnerable patients especially the housebound patients had been checked by our practice nurse in their own homes.

“Our internal feedback survey showed that patients were very happy with the services provided by the practice and we especially pride ourselves on our excellent access for appointments where majority of patients are seen on the day and do not have to wait long for routine appointments.

“We hope that all our existing patients and any future patients are reassured by this report and we will do our utmost to continue to provide the best medical service and try and maintain good access for appointments.”
