Stray cigarette causes fire in 17-storey block of flats in Coventry city centre

A fire in a 17-storey block of flats in the city centre was caused by a discarded cigarette.

West Midlands Fire Service received a 999 call on December 7 at around 8.50am.

Fifteen fire fighters were sent to tackle the fire on the second floor of Hillman House in Corporation Street .

One man was led to safety and treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics.

Fire crews were at the scene for over an hour.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “We received a 999 call to a block of flats in Corporation Street, Coventry.

“We sent three engines with 15 fire fighters. There was a small fire in the living room of the flat on the second floor of the 17-storey block of flats.

“It looks like it was caused by a cigarette. One man was let to safety.”

A spokesman from West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called by West Midlands Fire Service.

“We treated a man for smoke inhalation and took him to UHCW.”
