The council has announced a free parking offer in the run-up to Christmas

Christmas shoppers can park for free in Coventry from today.

The free parking will be available on all Wednesdays after 3pm until December 21.

Coventry council bosses say they want to help shoppers make the most of the late night Christmas shopping period on Wednesdays when many shops remain open later than usual.

It also means people can park for free to watch today's Christmas lights switch-on with former X Factor star Fleur East.

In addition to Wednesday parking, there will also be free parking after 3pm on Monday, December 19; Tuesday December 20; Wednesday, December, 21; Thursday, December 22; and Friday, December 23.

All council operated car parks will offer free parking during the above times.

Salt Lane Car park will continue to be free for anyone that enters after 6pm every day of the week.

Coun Jayne Innes, the council’s cabinet member for city services, said: “I’m so pleased that once again, we are able to offer free parking for Christmas visitors to the city centre after 3pm.

“It’s great for all of our late night shoppers who can tick paying for parking off the long lists of things to do before Christmas and save some money. I hope it encourages lots of people into the city centre for some shopping and a bite to eat too.”

This car park is Coventry's best-kept secret - and perfect for Christmas shopping

Shoppers in Coventry are missing out on easy parking - simply by not driving and walking a little bit further.

As people descend on the city to do their Christmas shopping, you will probably see queues of cars waiting to find a space in some city centre car parks - but just a few minutes away there’s likely to be floors of empty spaces.

At lunchtime today, there were only a handful of cars parked in spaces on floor seven of The Belgrade Plaza car park and there were 120 spaces completely empty on the top two floors.

It only takes just over five minutes to walk to the centre of town from The Belgrade Plaza and it is, in fact, cheaper than some other city centre car parks.

It’s not however taking part in the late night Christmas shopping deal which is being offered at all council operated car parks in the city this evening.

Parking is free at all of the council run car parks from 3pm on Wednesday evenings in the city centre in the run up to Christmas. There will also be free parking after 3pm on Monday on every weekday next week.

The West Orchards Shopping Centre car park is £1 for an hour and £1.80 for two hours.

Parking charges in Belgrade Plaza are at 50p for one hour and £1.80 for two.

I reckon you'd use a quid's worth of fuel getting up there?
