Long-suffering motorists will have to endure more overnight closures at Tollbar Island just as the project nears completion.

For several nights commencing October 10, there will be road closures in place for road surfacing.

From tomorrow, the A45 Stonebridge Highway going eastbound will be closed for one night between the Stivichall junction and Tollbar.

It will be closed from 8pm on Monday night until 6am on Tuesday morning for carriageway surface testing to take place.

On Tuesday night the same stretch but going in the opposite direction - from Tollbar to Stivichall - will be closed.

From 8pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday morning the westbound side will be closed, also for surface testing works to be carried out.

However, from Thursday the A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass will be closed for resurfacing works.

The entire southbound side between Binley Woods roundabout and Tollbar will be closed.

The misery doesn’t end there, because lanes will also be closed on both side of the A45 on London Road, Rowley Road, Siskin Drive and the southern section of Tollbar roundabout during the hours they will be resurfacing.

That work takes place from 8pm to 6am commencing on Thursday.

The closures can be found on the Highways England website and the diversion routes will be clearly signed. The planned closures may be cancelled or extended in the event of bad weathers or unforeseen circumstances.

The Tollbar End roadworks started in August 2013 and are due to be finished this Autumn.

The £106 million project will widen roads and build an underpass linking the A45 to the A46 and improving the island.

The area also had overnight road closures earlier in September to allow for more resurfacing work to be done.

More overnight closures announced at Tollbar Island

Motorists will face more overnight closures at Tollbar Island just weeks after the new underpass was opened .

For five nights, various routes around the Tollbar End improvement scheme will be closed to traffic.

Work to install concrete barriers and resurface the road began on Friday night and will continue until December 7.

Tonight, the westbound carriageway of the underpass will be shut to traffic between 8pm and 6am while work on the bridges takes place.

Traffic England say the closure will “ensure the safety of the workforce and travelling public while work to the bridges over this length of road is carried out”.

The eastbound carriageway of the underpass will also be closed for two nights - on Saturday, December 3, and Sunday, December 4 - from 8pm until 6am.

Once again the closure is in place to ensure the safety of the workforce and public while work on the bridges are completed.

On Sunday night, the A46 Kenilworth Bypass northbound will be closed from Stoneleigh to Styvechale junction to install concrete barriers.

The A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass southbound, between Binley Woods roundabout and Tollbar roundabout, will be closed for three nights for resurfacing.

The carriageway will be closed from 8pm to 6am between December 5 and December 7.

The closures can be found on the Highways England website and the diversion routes will be clearly signed. The planned closures may be cancelled or extended in the event of bad weathers or unforeseen circumstances.

£106m Tollbar Island junction finally officially opened today

THE £106million new Tollbar Island has finally officially fully opened today – ending years of disruption, Highways England has announced.

Traffic hold-ups, cones and delays have characterised the works to radically redesign the A45/A46 island near to Coventry Airport.

It partially opened last Autumn while work continued, bringing much relief to motorists.

The work has already improved journey times, with the creation of a split-layer junction and underpass.

More hold-ups are anticipated further alond the A46 with a forthcoming similar redesign of the ‘TGI roundabout’ at Binley.

Motorists travelling along the A45 Stonebridge Highway and A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass now have a free-flow link under Tollbar roundabout

An improved and larger Tollbar roundabout aims to give improved access to the existing routes.

The work has also seen a widening of the existing A45 Stonebridge Highway to a three lane dual carriageway between the new Tollbar roundabout and Stivichall junction to improve capacity and safety.

Highways England Chairman Colin Matthews said: “Tollbar End’s completion is fantastic news for motorists.

“It is a key hub in the Midlands road network and the £106 million scheme is already providing the benefits of smoother journeys between the important north-south routes.

“The opening of the underpass has improved traffic flow and alleviated congestion at what was once an historic bottleneck.”

Highways England project manager Paul Nagra said: “Everyone will benefit from the new road and journey times will be shorter and safer as a result of the new layout. It will also increase traffic flow and a reduction in congestion.

“We are really grateful to everyone for their patience while the work has been ongoing.”

Highways England said it has also created a new footbridge across the River Sowe to accommodate a new footpath and cycleway.

Preliminary works already causing delays at A45 junction

Road improvement works on the A45 aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety are already causing major delays before work proper has begun.

Motorists faced long queues this morning after preliminary works got under way at the junction at Finham, though much of the work has been timed to fit in with the school holidays in a bid to keep disruption to a minimum.

One commuter told the Telegraph delays around the junction added between 20 minutes and half-an-hour to their commute into Coventry from Leamington.

An extra lane is to be added to the roundabout on the A45 at the Leamington Road and St Martin’s Road junction at Finham along with two pedestrian crossings after the project was funded by the government’s Local Growth Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP).

Currently, there are three lanes for motorists using the busy roundabout but no pedestrian crossings. The junction improvements will start on Sunday July 23 and are expected to last for three months.

One or two lanes will be closed while the road improvements are carried out.

The scheme will also involve adding two pedestrian crossings either side of the roundabout.

Peak-time traffic signals will be installed which can be activated at busy times during the day to improve the traffic flow.

Jonathan Browning, chairman of the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said the work was getting under way proper at the start of the school summer holidays to keep disruption to a minimum.
