Man who stabbed lover's husband is convicted of attempted murder

Image

A man who stabbed his lover’s husband twice to the stomach and abdomen outside a Coventry pub was telling the truth when he told police he wanted to kill him, a jury has decided.

Although Adrian Brock had admitted wounding his victim Ryan Casey with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm, he had denied attempting to murder him.

But after considering the evidence for just over five hours at the end of a six-day trial, a jury at Warwick Crown Court found him guilty by a majority of 11-1.

Adjourning to reflect on the case, and for a report to be prepared on him, the judge warned Brock, 45, of Lower Precinct, Coventry, that he is facing a sentence of “a significant number of years”.

The jury heard that Mr Casey’s wife Laura had left him for Brock, but on October 2 last year she had gone to the Holyhead pub in Holyhead Road, Coventry, her husband’s local, with a friend following a row with Brock.

The two women were sitting at a table outside the pub with Mr Casey when Brock came up behind him and, without warning, aimed a kick at him and then punched him to the back of his head.

Brock had walked to the scene armed with a kitchen knife he had put up his sleeve before leaving his flat.

As Mr Casey then got to his feet and turned round to face him, Brock stabbed him twice to the stomach and abdomen, causing life-threatening injuries.

And prosecutor Matthew Farmer said: “The prosecution say this was clearly with an intention to kill.”

Adjourning the case until the New Year, Judge Lockhart said that in view of the adjournment, he would also order a report on Brock to consider the issue of his dangerousness.

He told the jury: “It will be a very long period indeed. This is one of the gravest crimes in the criminal calendar.”

And he explained: “For murder, one doesn’t have to have an intent to kill, but for attempted murder, you do.”

Remanding Brock in custody, Judge Lockhart told him: “The jury has found you told the truth in interview. You will have to be sentenced for attempted murder.

“That is a grave matter. You will receive a very significant sentence, as you know. This will be a figure well into a significant number of years.”

He left it with the barristers to discuss a date for sentencing with the court listing officer – and a provisional date of January 12 has since been agreed.

Knifeman who tried to murder love rival in Coventry pub jailed for 23 years

Image

A man who stabbed a love rival in a “horrific” unprovoked attack at a crowded Coventry pub has been jailed for 23 years.

Adrian Brock left his victim with life-threatening injuries following the vicious attack in the garden at the Holyhead pub on October 2 2016.

He punched Ryan Casey from behind before producing an eight-inch kitchen knife from up his sleeve and stabbing him in the stomach and abdomen.

Brock, 45, of Lower Precinct, in the city centre, had denied a charge of attempted murder but was found guilty by a jury on a majority of 11-1.

The court heard Brock was seeing Mr Casey’s estranged wife, Laura, but their relationship had begun to falter.
More on that sentence

Brock was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court today following an adjournment while a pre-sentence report was prepared.

Judge Andrew Lockhart said Brock’s sentence would be 23 years, of which he would serve “at least two thirds of that in custody” - making it at least 15 years and four months.

Once that time is up the case will then be referred to the Parole Board who will only release him if it decides it is safe to do so.

The judge said Brock would at that point be released on licence for four years.

The judge said he was also making a restraining order for Brock not to contact Laura Casey, Ryan Casey and a third female.

If Brock breaks the order, he will be jailed for five years.

Judge Lockhart described the attack on Mr Casey as “a planned attempt to kill”.

Referring to Brock’s interview with the police he said: “You made admissions about your conduct.

“You were arrested for attempted murder

“It was the clearest interview and the clearest admission of attempted murder.

“It was a chilling account.

“You said ‘I did it to kill, I didn’t do it to slash or maim’.

“You said once you got out of prison you will ‘hunt down Mr Casey and finish the job’.”

He added: “When you found out he had survived you said you thought you had ‘done enough’.

“You showed absolutely no remorse at all.

“You acted in a selfish way, blackening the name of Ryan Casey, the man whose life you seeked to end.

“You lied to the jury about what your intention was.

“You told those wholesale lies on oath.

“Many others witnessed a full-scale attempt to kill. It was a horrific scene.

“This was a planned attempt to kill.”
